The whole Fuerteventura island was declared as a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO in 2009 for its rich environmental patrimony.

El Cotillo stayed apart from the tourims masses and kept partially untouched the beauty of its nature and his spirit of fishermen's village. On June 2010 the Playa de la Concha, the biggest of the Lagos, was awarded with the ecolabel Blue Flag for its high environmental value.

All around El Cotillo visitors can discover various beaches and striking landscapes. In the north of the island there's also the the opportunity to visit the Natural Park of Dunes of Corralejo and Lobos Island far 20 km aprox.
